RECENT FIELD TRIALS OF LOW-CARBON CONCRETE:  SUCCESSES, FAILURES AND LESSONS LEARNED

LAWRENCE SUTTER, PhD, PE, FASTM, FACI

SUTTER ENGINEERING LLC

Over the past year, a number of field trials have been performed to study constructability and in-service performance of various low-carbon concrete mixtures.  A number of emerging materials were evaluated including multiple cements meeting existing specifications as well as some materials that currently are not covered under existing specifications.  The latter group primarily concerned blended cements not covered under ASTM C595 but would conform with ASTM C1157.  The projects included tilt-up walls, interior flat work, and paving.  Preliminary results from the studies will be summarized and lessons learned will be presented.  Also, future opportunities for similar projects will be discussed.

Larry Sutter, Ph.D., P.E., is the Principal of Sutter Engineering LLC.  He is also a Professor Emeritus/Research Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at Michigan Technological University.  His focus is concrete durability, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), the advancement of alternative cements and SCMs, and carbon reduction in concrete.  He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Chairman of Committee 321 Concrete Durability Code, Vice-Chairman of ACI Committee 232 Fly Ash and Secretary of ACI Committee 201 Concrete Durability.  He is President of the Board for the ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete (NEU).  He is also a Fellow of ASTM and a member of Committees C01 (Cement) and C09 (Concrete), serving as Vice Chair of Committee C09 and Chairman of subcommittees C01.14 Non-Hydraulic Cements and C09.24 on Supplementary Cementitious Materials.  He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan.
